L’Ermitage Rosé 2012

95 Points

Wine Spectator October 21, 2020

This has a great nose, bursting with blood orange, candied ginger and lemon peel aromas, with hints of marzipan, leading to steely and mature flavors that linger delicately on the spicy finish. Nicely combines freshness and maturity. Drink now.”

There’s ample red-apple flavor at the center of this wine, lingering with a light touch, and hints of spicy orange and ripe peach. That sweet fruit finishes clean, with a gentle sweep of acidity, balanced and long. For scallop and sashimi.”

Wine & Spirits October 2020

L’Ermitage is a selection of the estate’s top fruit of the vintage. The 2013 is 52 percent chardonnay and 48 percent pinot noir, with four percent barrel-aged reserve wine from the 2011 vintage. It’s mouthwatering and dynamic, with layers of flavor, both fresh apple and more mature notes. An elegant, satisfying sparkler with dimension, it’s fit for a plateau de fruits de mer.”

It’s rare to find a sparkling wine outside of Champagne with this rosé’s finesse. The Roederer Estate team, led by Arnaud Weyrich and under the guidance of Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon in Reims, are rosé specialists. They produce this wine by first selecting the top fruit from Roederer’s 580 acres of estate-owned vineyards, blending virtually equal amounts of chardonnay and pinot noir as the base wine, and including a small amount of delicately macerated pinot noir for color and fragrance. That points up the pale-pink raspberry freshness of this eight-year-old youth. Like the best release of L’Ermitage, those flavors have precision, a concentrated presence and ethereal finesse.”

Made with ten grams per liter dosage and disgorged in January of 2016, the 2009 L’Ermitage Brut slowly offers up scents of apple pie, quince paste, toast, honey, hay and mushrooms with touches of crème caramel and an undercurrent of shell-like minerality. The medium-bodied palate is still offering loads of pure orchard fruits with a wrapping of brioche and toasty accents, creamy but still lively mousse and a long, layered finish. This is in a lovely spot for drinking now but will benefit from more time in bottle if you like mature bubbles.”

The 2013 L’Ermitage Brut is the current release of L’Ermitage and was disgorged in June of 2019. 2013 was the beginning of a long period of drought, and winemaker Arnaud Weyrich feels that it brings this vintage concentration, phenolics and texture — this wine has body.” The nose is open and inviting, golden apples mingling with toast, mushrooms, honey and crushed stone. The medium-bodied palate, with eight grams per liter dosage, has pure fruits tactfully accented by earthy, toasty notes. It’s energetic but rounded, supported by a finely beaded mousse, and it finishes long and layered.”

Pale salmon-pink, the 2012 L’Ermitage Brut Rosé offers up fresh aromas of red berries, melon and peaches with nuances of mushroom, hay, toast, citrus peel and floral perfume coming through with time in the glass. The medium-bodied palate offers concentrated, pure, fresh fruits with lightly toasty accents, energetic mousse and addicting freshness on the long finish. Lovely! This was disgorged in June of 2019 and made with about eight grams per liter dosage.”

The current release of the NV Estate Brut is made up mainly of fruit from the 2015 vintage. It is a blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir and was made with about ten grams per liter dosage. Disgorged in October of 2018, it has a fresh, open nose with pure fruit expression: crushed apples, pears and lemon peel mingle with touches of stone, flowers and toast. The medium-bodied palate offers a lovely dichotomy of toasty fruits with uplifted citrusy, minerally accents with a finely beaded mousse, and it finishes long and ultra fresh.”
